Introduction:

Dr Barry Gilbert Specialist Public Health Physician

and Occupational Medicine Consultant

June 2017

As a specialist public health physician, I trained in epidemiology, biostatistics and occupational health at Monash University. However throughout my career I have maintained active clinical practice in Primary, Acute, Emergency and Hospital based care.

I continue to practice in the primary, acute and emergency medicine clinical environment as well as practice in public health and occupational medicine. I undertake continuing professional development with the RACP and completed the 2014-2016 triennium for the RACGP (see attached).

I have been the Federal President of the Australia and New Zealand Society of Occupational Medicine (ANZSOM) and a counsellor, and current member, of the International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID), Member of the Australian Pain Society (APS), and Member of the Tasmania State Committee of the RACP. I am an active Member of the International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH)

I advise regarding chronic pain management and musculoskeletal medicine. I undertake independent medical assessments for the purpose of rehabilitation and return to work, including fitness for duty, worksite assessments, and consult on return to work plans for injured workers.

Based in Launceston, Tasmania I also consult in Victoria, ACT, Queensland and South Australia.

To ensure ‘best practice’ in pain management I attend regular professional meetings as both speaker and participant, and attend the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Australian Pain Society, and collaborate with Pain Australia.

I am a Winston Churchill Memorial Fellow in Preventive Medicine (USA, Canada, UK and Northern Ireland), Companion of the Australian Rotary Health Research Foundation, and Paul Harris Fellow.
